My first thought when I found this next one in my inbox was, “This should be good.” I had my hopes up and CODEKO didn’t let me down. I have personally been keeping an eye on the UK producer for a while now, when I found a flip of MGMT‘s, “KIDS“, in the queue I knew I was in for a treat.
Firstly, this isn’t a project you should take lightly. The original was an absolutely massive hit, and if you play with it and fuck it up…. people will be pissed – mark my words. Fortunately for CODEKO, he absolutely nailed it. Since the track has been out for quite some time, you may be thinking – why didn’t he remix something newer? Let him explain…
“MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular was one of the first CD’s I ever bought. I was 12 years old at the time and used to run around my house in London blasting KIDS. KIDS is a special record to me so I wanted to include it in my sets throughout my USA Summer Tour. It took a lot of work to remix this one as I had to manipulate the original track in the way I wanted; I had to recreate a lot of the sounds myself (such as the synth baseline & hook) rather than using the original samples, in order to avoid distortion and get a cleaner sounding product. That meant re-designing the synth patches by ear, and reprogramming the midi manually. However, the final product was worth it; it’s a track that has the perfect balance of nostalgia and recognizability, while still going off live.”
This was clearly a passion project for him and nod to MGMT who obviously had an impact early in his life, helping to guide him on the path he decided to take. If you listen closely, you can not only hear the love in the track, but the time that went into making it pop… and POP it does.
If how this hits in my headphones is any indication… I’m officially pissed that I didn’t get to hear this drop at a stop on his US summer tour. Well done sir. I’m sure you’ve done MGMT proud.
