BAUM Releases New Cut from Upcoming EP ‘Ungodly’ [Q&A]

A lot of times when your run a music site, talent seems to emerge from thin air.  You find a release in your inbox and you think, “where has this been”.  To be honest, that is still one of my favorite things about running RockDafuqOutNEW MUSIC DISCOVERY.

When we found this next tune in our inbox, we knew we were going to have to show LA songstress BAUM some love.  Her latest release, “This Body”, is a smooth downtempo jam that relies on some 80’s inspired Pop vibes, great vocals and solid songwriting.  On the production end, airy melodies fill the background while funky guitar riffs and bright flavors pepper the track.  Add in a stellar arrangement, a great mix and a bomb progression and there isn’t much more you need.BAUM dominates on the vocals not only showing off her range, but she also incorporates some slick harmonies and ties it all together witty catchy top lines.  A bit haunting, very much sultry and with just the right amount of attitude – a great performance all around.

Knowing that this is my jam, but not too much more – I figured it would be sweet to catch up with BAUM for a quick Q&A.  Check it out below and keep an eye on her for sure.

RDFO: We love your vocals.  How long have you been singing for?

BAUM: Thank you! I’ve been informally singing my whole life… I loved to do it as a kid. I imitated whatever I heard. I started taking lessons when I was in elementary school.

RDFO: Who produced this track?

BAUM: The producers are called The OrphanageTrevor Brown and Zaire Koalo. They worked with Oak Felder on Demi Lovato‘s last record.

RDFO: Where did you get the name BAUM from?

BAUM: BAUM is part of my last name. A couple years ago my friends and I were talking about potential artist names and one of them was just like “oh, why don’t you go by BAUM?” and it just worked.

RDFO: Where is home for you and where are you currently residing now?

BAUM: I live in LA and I do consider it home here. I fell in love with California the second I got here. I was born and raised in New York City.

RDFO: What is up next for you musically this year?

BAUM: I’m putting out my first EP, “Ungodly“, March 16th and I’m playing SXSW the week before that!

RDFO: Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations?

BAUM: Some of my biggest influences are classic rock and blues artists like Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, B.B. King and The Rolling Stones. I listen to a lot of R&B now like Frank Ocean, Kanye, SZA, etc. I also listen to a lot of indie music. I have a Spoon tattoo on my arm…

RDFO: Who is your favorite person to collaborate with these days?

BAUM: I like collaborating with people I know well, because theres no pause when I’m like ‘is this going to sound stupid?‘. I really like working with my friend Madison Douglas. We write very comfortably together and she’s just an amazing musician/human.

RDFO: What do you do when you are not making music?

BAUM: When I’m not making music I’m playing with dogs or watching Criminal Minds.
