For the past decade, Swedish producer and songwriter Kleerup has become one of the standout stars from the Scandinavian music scene racking up credits alongside acts like Roxette, Cardigans, Shout Out Louds and even writing massive Pop smash, “With Every Heartbeat”, with Robyn. Beyond his work behind the scenes Kleerup has also been sure to keep things ever-consistent on the solo side.
Now prepared to release a new album at the end of 2019, Kleerup has just unveiled the projects lead single, “Lovers Table”, featuring sensational vocalist AlunaGeorge. Written in collaboration with fellow Swede Joacim Persson (Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Lady Gaga), the new tune brings a moody, driving, ambient feel that sits perfectly with AlunaGeorge’s ever-seductive and delicate vocal stylings. About the collaboration, Kleerup says, “It’s always inspiring to work with such incredible talented people, Aluna and Joacim went beyond what I could ever have hoped for. I think we really nailed all the parts on this song, the vocals, the production and the whole team is perfect. I couldn’t be happier to release this track as a sort of a comeback single.”
While nearly everything AlunaGeorge touches ends up in my playlists for years to come, the lush and moody production laid out by Kleerup on this one make her feel right at home. Speaking on the inspiration for the song, AlunaGeorge says, “We worked in this beautiful little studio in East London that overlooked a cobbled courtyard, just on piano for most of the day which is my fave way to write songs. At the time I was really interested in the idea of a career woman giving up on love because she just felt she wasn’t invited to the table. The cliché of the lonely female boss that is familiar, yet comfortable, because you don’t have to risk your heart — in many ways it was personal experience. Until someone comes along to challenge that paradigm and you realise you have to jump in even though you feel like you can’t.”
With this standout single serving as the first taste of what’s to come from Kleerup’s new album, this has more than enough juice to get me excited. I will be patiently waiting to hear what’s next.
