The Sunshine State, New Project By Skyler Stonestreet, Pens An Ode To Reckless Youth With “Things Changed”

Skyler Stonestreet is no newcomer to the music industry. Having penned hits for artists like Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, The Chainsmokers, Marshmello, Hailee Steinfeld, and many more, Stonestreet is finally putting her dextrous songwriting and revered indie sound to life. Her new project, The Sunshine State, breaks into the new year with her second release “Things Changed.”

The tune amplifies the naive and blissfully nature of youth. While the shiny guitar riffs set the tone, the pounding drums drive the song’s momentum. Stonestreet’s vocals convey such an innocent tone and radiate a sprightly nature, complementing the reminiscent lyrics. With lines like “run off for a couple days, not even thinking ‘bout anyone” and “thought you belonged to me,” her words of impulsivity and growth put the singer’s songwriting capabilities on full display. In regards to the tune, Stonestreet remarks:

“‘Things Changed’ is about where I was in my life and where I could have gone. It’s about who I was with and where they ended up. It’s about the different roads you can take and the ones you choose to leave behind.”

While The Sunshine State is a manifestation of alt-pop and indie-rock, discovering it’s musical identity wasn’t easy, as Stonestreet notes:

“It’s taken me a long time to figure out exactly what I want to do with my music and I feel like this crazy 2020 has actually helped unlock that [..] I feel like I have honestly lived a lot of different lives, some that I have never really looked at, or acknowledged. I think I got too good at pretending they didn’t exist, so I felt like writing about them all.”

Born in Las Vegas, Skyler moved to Los Angeles shortly after graduating high school to pursue a career in music. However, a breast cancer diagnosis put things on hold for a little while. After successfully battling the disease, Skyler’s experience, determination, and gusto became a clear catalyst for her burgeoning career. “[Breast cancer] doesn’t define me,” Stonestreet shared with Ones To Watch. “But now I want to help other people who are going through it. And I want girls to know that they should feel okay in their own skin.”
